Insurance carriers advertise that you can basically pick your own price. At what expense you ask? At yours, always. Don’t let these cute commercials fool you, at end of the day the insurance giants have not only shareholders waiting to take a piece but they have greedy CEO’s that make tens of millions of dollars a year. So when I hear that you can pick your own insurance premium it sends chills down my spine knowing what that actually means.
It happens every single day. Someone is minding their own business when out of the blue some careless driver slams into them because they are not paying attention and most likely texting. This person now has a totaled car and finds themselves severely injured with medical bills pilling up. They come see me and I have to give some terrible news. The bad news is that the person that was responsible for their accident is at best under-insured and at worst not insured at all. This is the time and situation where those monthly insurance premiums they made religiously for the past ten years should help, right? Wrong! Come to find out, what they thought was “full coverage”, is not. Don’t get tricked into this. If you do not carry Under/Uninsured Motorist Coverage more likely than not there is nothing we can do for you. You, your medical bills, and your injury, have no way of being compensated and you had no idea. This is the sad situation many find themselves in daily; but you can protect yourself.
First, go online or call your insurance carrier and ask them for a detailed list of all your coverage. If you want to email that to me I will review for you as a courtesy. Nine times out of ten when I review coverages they are either too low or non-existent at all. What you need to make sure you have is Uninsured Motorist Coverage. The extra couple of bucks you pay a month will come in handy if you or your family member find themselves in the scenario I described. At a minimum, in this day and age, you should carry 100k in uninsured motorist coverage. What does that mean? It means that your insurance carrier will stand in the shoes of the person that is responsible for the accident and make sure you are taken care of. But wait, that’s too simple to be true you ask? That is because it is. In this day and age insurance carriers no longer look at the situation and cut a check for what they owe. In fact, if you do not have an attorney you can rest assured you will be low-balled on each and every claim. Having an attorney doesn’t mean that they will properly evaluate your claim either. But having a competent attorney that handles personal injury and regularly litigates personal injury claims will assure that you will have an advocate when it comes time to be properly compensated. We are able to essentially hold their feet to the fire and make sure that if they do not pay what is owed that they will be sued in order to assure that occurs.
Next time you take out your check book or credit card to pay your auto premiums ask yourself, “am I properly covered”? If you cannot answer that in the affirmative or if you do not know then make sure to send me an email- Christian@BerkMyer.com. I will be more than happy to review your coverage and make recommendations that will protect you and your family. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure they say. It couldn’t be more correct when it comes to assuring that you are safe in an age of distracted drivers.
