Did you know that there were approximately 770 auto accidents every day in 2012 in the State of Florida alone? Additionally, a St. Petersburg passenger died in a horrific truck crash on 71st Street near 50th Avenue N on November 20, 2013. Although nobody wants to be involved in (or even think about) a car accident, it’s important to know what to do afterwards.
Here are three important things you need to do after an auto accident:
1. The most important thing you need to do after a car accident is to seek prompt medical attention. Even if you don’t think you’re injured, you need to have a medical evaluation and it needs to be performed by a proper medical doctor. Certain injuries like whiplash don’t have symptoms that occur right away. Your first priority should always be to make sure you and your family are safe and taken care of.
2. If you’re able, it’s important you record important information such as the license plate number of each car involved in the car accident, the names and license numbers of the people involved, and pictures of the accident scene. You should also jot down everything you remember about the car accident including events before and after the event. It’s important to do this as quickly as possible as memories fade over time.
3. If you or someone you love has been hurt in an auto accident, it’s important to contact an experienced attorney as you may be able to sue the other driver and/or their insurance company for damages. This should be done as soon as possible so that your claims can’t be jeopardized. Remember, don’t sign anything prior to meeting with an attorney. Many insurance companies and their legal teams will pressure you to settle right away, and although you might be tempted to settle, you need to seek representation to make sure you get what you’re entitled too.
As you know, car accidents can occur at almost any time through no fault of your own. Someone else’s carelessness or aggressive driving can turn your entire life upside down. That being said, it’s important to know what to do should you be involved in a serious auto collision. Always remember to seek prompt medical attention, record important information and seek experienced legal representation.
